What is a DC2TOG Crochet Stitch (and How to Make It) (1)

DC2TOG crochet stitch is usually used to decrease the number of stitches in the row.

What is a DC2TOG Crochet Stitch

DC2TOG stands for Double Crochet 2 Together and is a stitch that takes 2 DC stitches and makes them into 1 DC.

It’s a derivative of DC (Double Crochet) and it is 2 DC stitches that are crocheted together, getting rid of one and leaving the other.

Because DC2TOG reduces the number of stitches in a row, it is also called a decrease stitch.

DC2TOG is one of the decrease stitches that come from the same family as SC2TOG and HDC2TOG.

What can you make with DC2TOG stitch

The decrease that DC2TOG provides can be used in the shaping of crochet projects like amigurumi, purses, clothing (things like necklines and armholes).

DC2TOG is often used in patterns that have chevron or ripple motif, like blankets.

Double crochet 2 together is also great for the projects that have a triangle shape like wraps, shawls and bandana scarves.

Things to know about DC2TOG stitch

  • Sometimes DC2TOG is called a cluster stitch. It comes from the family of other cluster or -TOG stitches like SC2TOG and HDC2TOG.
  • If you are using it for shaping and decreasing, you will be using it mostly the edges of your work (unless you are creating something like amigurumi).
  • When you are working DC2TOG as a part of the design, and you get to the next row, you will have new stitches going into the top of your DC2TOG (and the ch spaces) below. If you are crocheting regular DCs over the DC2TOG stitches below, you will most likely be inserting your hook into the large loop at the top of the cluster (that is that single loop that joined 2 DCs together). You will also be working into ch-2 space between the clusters. At times you might be working into the loop that is after the large loop.
  • When the DC2TOG is used in the middle of the row, it often serves as a decorative stitch. It joins up 2 DC stitches at the top and makes a sort of a skinny triangle shape. Keep in mind that when you use DC Together stitch in the middle of the project if you want to keep your stitch count the same, you will need to add a stitch to compensate.
  • If you are trying to make sure that the same number of stitches is kept in each row, you will need to use chain stitches in between the DC2TOG to basically add in the DC stitches that were eliminated each DC2TOG group.

Here is how you crochet DC2TOG starting with the chain

When you are doing DC2TOG at the beginning of the row, you would first CH 3 (to create first regular DC).

Yarn over, insert hook into the third chain from the hook (front to back), yarn over, and pull the loop through. You have 3 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. You have 2 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and insert into the second stitch, yarn over and pull the loop though. You have 4 loops on a hook.

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. You have 3 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops at the same time.
