    • Leucistic
The Leucistic Axolotls will spawn with a darker pink trim and a light pink body.
    • Wild
The Wild Axolotls will spawn with a darker brown trim and a brown body.

Finding one rare Axolotl in the wild may be time-consuming, but breeding can speed up the process. Through breeding, the spawn rate remains .8%, however it can be performed a lot of times by feeding Axolotl what they love to eat.

    • Rare
Rare Axolotl will spawn with a blue trim, blue body, and orange fins near its face.

Previous or Unreleased Rarity

There are three color variations of Axolotl that have been seen, however, they are not available in-game. Those color variations will be shown around the reveal of the Cliffs and Caves update, however they have been either changed or unreleased. Here are they:

    • Pink
Pink is the original color variation for the Leucistic Axolotl. It appeared as a very light coral pink with a dark pink trim. Its design was later replaced with the updated Leucistic colors.
    • Light Brown
The Wild Axolotl first appeared as a much lighter brown body, but it was later changed to the currentWild Axolotl colors.
    • Green
The green Axolotl was presented briefly during a recap of the Cliffs and Caves update reveal. However, it is not available in-game. Well, it’s also possible that the green variation will be added during the part 2 Cliffs and Caves update.

Okay, those are all Axolotl color rarities that you can find in Minecraft. Keep in mind, gathering all five of the Axolotl color variations will be a great challenge. However, finding a rare Axolotl will be one of the most interesting moments, considering its rarity in Minecraft. Even though Axolotl can not be tamed technically, they can be picked up with a bucket.

Learn About Axolotl’s Behaviour

It is known that Axolotls are passive toward players. They can also be attached to leads. They really give Regeneration I for 100 game ticks (5 seconds) per Axolotl in the fight that is up to a duration of 2400 game ticks (2 minutes). Aside from that, they also remove Mining Fatigue when you kill a mob which is in combat with an Axolotl.

Furthermore, Axolotls can also attack all aquatic mobs except dolphins, turtles and other Axolotls. They will also attack drowned. Per attack, an Axolotl will deal 2 points of damage. Once killing a non-hostile mob, there will be a two minutes cooldown before another non-hostile mob will be hunted. Over non-hostile mobs, Axolotls prioritize attacking hostile mobs.

If an Axolotl deals damage underwater, it will play dead that drops to the ground for 200 game ticks (10 seconds), while getting Regeneration I. In this case, hostile aquatic mobs will ignore healing axolotls and an axolotl will have a 1/3 chance to play dead to recover 4.

Additionally, if either the Axolotl’s health before the damage is dealt is less than 50% of its maximum health or a random integer from 0-2 (inclusive) is less than the amount of incoming damage, it will play dead.

Talking about its habit, Axolotls can also leave the water and wander about on land. Axolotls tend to return to the nearest water source, as they will die outside of water once 6000 game ticks (5 minutes), though they will be able to wander too far and die before they return.

Axolotls can be as passengers in a boat that will also die out of water. Unlike dolphins, fish and squid, they will not die on land in a thunderstorm or rain. Unlike most mobs in Minecraft, they cannot be moved by flowing water, but they are still affected by Bubble Columns.

As aquatic mobs, Axolotls will take extra damage from the Impaling enchantment. They can also cause nearby pufferfish to inflate, unlike other aquatic mobs. They that are picked up with a water bucket and re-spawned will not despawn. Additionally, you can also rename Axolotl by placing a bucket of Axolotl into an anvil, the same as if renaming any other items.

About Axolotls’ Breeding

Adult Axolotls can be bred with buckets of tropical fish. Once breeding, a baby Axolotl will spawn and 1-7 experience will be generated. Its parent cannot be bred again for 5 minutes i minute in Bedrock Edition and 5 minutes in Java Edition.

The baby Axolotl will have a 1/1200 chance to become the rare blue variant. Meanwhile it can inherit the color of one parent at random. In this case, babies will follow adults and grow to adulthood in 20 minutes. The baby Axolotls’ growth can be accelerated with buckets of tropical fish where each usage will reduce the remaining growing time by 10%.
